Scariest Environment Possible.
|
In the movie “Armageddon” Owen Wilson’s character asks what it will be like when they land on the asteroid. After receiving an answer that included some less the friendly conditions, he simply stated, “so the scariest environment imaginable, that’s all you had to say, scariest environment imaginable.” This scene kept popping in my head as I was watching Shark Week on the Discovery Channel last Sunday. The show “Ocean of Fear” which chronicled the plight of the U.S.S Indianapolis, in which over 900 men were left for dead floating in the Ocean for 5 days in 100 degree heat, with no food or water, many of them severely injured after their ship was sunk by a Japanese sub, struck me as the scariest environment ever. Oh yeah, they were also surrounded my man eating sharks to boot. I just could not comprehend how any of those men made it out alive with their minds in tack. If you haven’t checked the show out you should and then ask yourself what you would have done? I would like to think I would have had what it took to tough it out, but I really don’t know.
It got me thinking though as to what is indeed my scariest environment imaginable. Here’s what I came up with, in no particular order.
- Being stranded in the ocean. The ocean is just flat out scary. Especially at night when you can’t see 2 feet in any direction. You never know whats around you, or coming for you. I have no desire to ever go in the ocean and don’t see why anybody else would. Sharks, squids, killer whales, no thanks.
- Airplane going down. We’ve all been freaked out by bad turbulence from time to time. Now try having a wing ripped off and going end over end at 400 MPH. I just pooped my pants thinking about this one.
- Being stuck in a swamp. Kind of the same thing as the ocean but more disgusting. At least you can walk in the ocean without getting freaked out. If your shoe touches swap water you end up shrieking like a girl. Gators, snakes, tiny fish that swim up your wang, no thanks.
- Being chased by fast zombies. Not as likely to happen as the other scenarios, but ever since I saw “Dawn of the Dead” I have been terrified by fast zombies. Regular zombies, no big deal. Fast zombies keep me up at night.
- Stuck in a Jungle. I don’t know what exactly about jungles freaks me out so much, but they do. I’m cool with the woods and nature in general, but the jungle is something different. I think I’ve seen “Predator” one too many times. I just picture me falling into a pit of snakes or something and that's enough to keep me out.
